1. The life of the Negro is still sadly crippled by the manacles of segregation and the chains of discrimination.’ Elaborate.
Ans. In America, the life of the Negro is very sad. Their life is like that of a disabled person because they are segregated person in the society. They can’t go to public places and can’t stay in the motels and hotels of the cities. They have separate ghettos to live. The live their in insanitary conditions. They do not have equal rights. They are racially discriminated every where. They are tribulated, tortured and tormented. Such restrictions are like manacles that hinder their growth and make them crippled.
2. What would be fatal for the nation? Why? Explain.
Ans. It would be fatal for the nation to overlook the urgency of the moment and underestimate the determination of the black population. It would be so because the nation will have to face the consequences if the dissatisfaction of one of its sections takes an ugly turn. Negro is granted his citizenship rights and they will begin a revolt for their rights and justice. The great wind of revolution would shake the foundation of the nation. It would be seriously fatal and injurious for the nation.
3. What was the ‘dream’? How many times ‘I have a dream’ appears in the lesson? Discuss the importance of this repetition.
Ans. The ‘dream’ was Martin Luther’s vision of the bright future of the negro, and of brotherhood with the white people. His dream was that some day the racial discrimination would come to an end and the sons of slaves and sons of owners will share the same table of fraternity.
‘I have a dream’ appears nine times in the lesson. By repeating this in his speech Martin Luther makes his speech more forceful. He wants to draw the attention of people towards his dream and give them hope and courage and enthusiasm.
4. What is the pledge? When will it be fulfilled?
Ans. The pledge is to achieve freedom, justice, equality and harmony for all Americans. This pledge will be fulfilled when they always march ahead and never turn back. It will happen when Negroes are free from the clutches of slavery and are given their rights.
