1. Who was Seibei? What was his hobby?
Ans. Seibei was a twelve years old boy who was still in primary school. His father worked at a carpenter’s shop. His hobby was to wander about in town and collect the gourds. He had a collection of gourds. He treated gourds with great care and polished them. But his parents did not like this.
2. Pick out instances from the story to show that Seibei was passionate towards gourd collection.
Ans. Seibei was passionate towards gourds and he always thinking of them. Whenever he passed grocery, curio-shops or a confectioner’s, he would stop to look at gourds for a few minutes. After class instead of playing with other children, he usually wandered about the town looking for the gourds.
One day he saw an old woman selling gourds. He immediately examined them. There he found a small gourd which caught his fancy. He wanted to buy it. He asked the woman to hold it for him. He ran home to get money and went back to get the gourd. He was ready to do anything and everything for gourds.
3. Explain the views of Seibei’s father about him and his hobby.
Ans. Seibei’s father had no artistic tastes. He wanted his son to become an educated person. He didn’t like his son’s passion for gourds. His desires were to give up his son unwanted work for unwanted things. He always guided his son to give up that work and that things. He believed that his passion for that work would take him nowhere in the world.
4. Why did Seibei’s teacher become angry with him? Was his anger justified?
Ans. Seibei was so passionate about the gourds that he even took it along to school and used to polish it in class time. When the teacher see this, he became very angry. He confiscated the gourd. I think that teacher’s anger was justified because the class was going on and Seibei was not taking interest in his subject. He was doing another work during the class time. So the teacher became angry which was right for him as a teacher.
5. Seibei’s teacher held his parents responsible for Seibei’s mistake. Do you agree with the teacher? Explain.
Ans. Seibei’s teacher held his parents responsible for his mistakes. I agree with him. It is parent’s duty to take care of their children. Many parents have no time to see what their child is doing. That is not right for the future of their child. Parents should see that their children do not spend too much time on watching TV, playing games and chatting with others.
6. Describe in your own words the attitude and reaction of the teacher to Seibei’s passion.
Ans. The teacher belonged to a different part of Japan. He had his own concept about life. He believed that children should listen to their elders because they don’t have satisfactory intellect. He didn’t like Seibei’s passion. He wanted that Seibei should get rid of his worthless passion. He called Seibei an idiot and even complained his parents about it.
7. Why and how did Seibei change his hobby? Describe in your own words.
Ans. Seibei had a strong passion about gourds but all his elders, parents and teachers scolded him for this. His father smashed all the gourds Seibei had polished. Their continuous hammering made him change his hobby. He thought why to hurt others for himself. Now he could not collect gourds. He diverted his mind to painting pictures.
8. Sketch the character of Seibei as an artist.
Ans. Seibei was a born artist. He wanted to be close to the world of art. He was passionate for collecting gourds and always looking for gourds. But his parents and elders didn’t like this. His teacher scold him for polishing the gourd during class time. He complained it to his father. His father got angry and broke all his gourds. At this, Seibei could not restrain his talent and diverted to painting. He was a pure artist and wanted to give expression to his urge.
