1. Benjy treat his parents justly? What would you do if you were Benjy?
Ans. No, according to me, Benjy did not treated his parents justly. They made every sacrifice for him but he treated them most heartlessly. He was never grateful to them. He showed no emotions and no affection towards them and drove them out of the house and left them to look after themselves. If I were Benjy, I would not have done like this. I would have made a proper bridge between us and remove the problems and never made them to leave the house.
2. On how many occasions were Benjy’s parents disappointed with Benjy’s behaviour? Describe each occasion briefly in your own words.
Ans. Benjy’s parents were disappointed by him at following occasions:
1. When he took the passbook without saying a word of gratitude and willingness to share the money with them.
2. When he decided to marry Florence even they didn’t like her.
3. When Benjy drove them out from the house as he had purchased it.
3. ‘Looks are deceptive.’ How does this apply to Benjy?
Ans. When Benjy was a child, he looked very innocent and simple minded. His parents believed that he lacked normal intelligence and his brain needed proper development. But Benjy was a very cunning person. He was very cruel and selfish. His parents made many sacrifices for him but he forgot all that and drove them out to a town to live themselves. Indeed his innocent and simple looks hid his cunningness behind them.
4. What is the role of Florence in this story? How did she affect Benjy’s life?
Ans. Florence was a girl who works on Benjy’s farm. She had thick heavy legs and loose lips and unreflective grey eyes. She helped Benjy in cleaning the chicken houses. Benjy wanted a woman who can help him in caring of his hens. He liked the Florence and decided to marry her. His parents were not happy at this but he avoided them and marry with Florence. She did not like Benjy’s parents. There were quarrels in the house. At last they joined together to drive out the old parents,
5. Johnson himself was responsible for his tragedy or troubles. Do you agree with this? Give reasons.
Ans. Yes, I agree that Johnson was responsible for the troubles. He believed in talking more than action. He was lazy and never tried to get a better yield from his land. He thought his son a dull and useless boy. Benjy give him a very bad treatment but he never learnt any lesson from his behaviour. Thus, we can say that he himself was responsible for his troubles.
6. How is a simple-minded man defined in the story? Do you agree with this definition?
Ans. A simple minded man is a man with no wit; a dull kind of a man with less. understanding. In this story, Benjy is described as a simple-minded person. His parents believed that he looked different from others. I do not agree with this definition because Benjy was not an idiot. To consider a person siriple-headed just by his looks is not right.
7. Sketch the character of Johnson.
Ans. Johnson was a tenant farmer. He was also a local preacher and on Sundays he liked to talk to village congregations. He believed that God, who has created this earth, would also take care of it. Johnson loved his only son Benjy. He believed Benjy was simple-headed. He made several sacrifices for Benjy. He was again and again disappointed by Benjy’s selfishness. But he always forgave him. In the end, Benjy drove him out. Form his house and he suffered because of his foolish faith in his son.
8. Sketch the character of Benjy.
Ans. Benjy is the central figure and the most impressive character of the story. He was not like an ordinary child. His father believed that he was simple-headed. Since his childhood instead of playing he took to the work for earning money.
