1. The editorial policy of a popular daily is controlled by two chief factors. Which are they? Explain. 

Ans. According to the writer, the editorial policy of a popular daily is controlled by two chief factors. The first is the interest of the advertisers from whom it gets the money which enables it to keep up its large circulation. Major part of their revenue comes from advertisers. So, no newspaper can support any policy if it goes against the vested interests of its advertisers. Second point is the wealth of the company or its owner. If the owner is wealthy enough then he may shape the policies according to his wish and tackle the ups and downs nicely.


2. What is garbling? How does Sayers illustrate this form of distortion?

Ans. According to Miss Sayers, garbling is special accomplishment of the Press interviewer. She illustrates an incident concerning herself. Once a reporter had asked her about her future plans. At this she answered that she never made plans. Her reply appeared in Press with a garbling. It said, “Miss Sayers said that she would write no more plays, except on commission. One should not believe that public men have said all this which appears in Press.


3. Describe in your own words the instances of deliberate miracle-mongering.

Ans. The writer has given an interesting instance of deliberate miracle-mongering which was recently reported in various papers. The writer made a public speech which had some 20,000 words in the space of hour and a quarter. This would have been impossible in any case. Actually her speech consisted of almost exactly 8000 words. The error was thus presisely 150 percent, a useful figure on which to base one’s estimate of truth in reporting. It would have been a miracle if any person could deliver 20,000 words in such a short time-period.


4. How are letters of protest treated by the newspapers? Describe in your own words. 

Ans. According to the writer, if a letter of protest about the misquoted, written to any newspaper, it is almost have no impression on paper. In any case, heavy and exhausting of correspondence-for the falsehood may be syndicated call over the words overnight and appear simultaneously in several hundred papers. Sometimes the editors write a private letter in reply regretting the mistake. Rarely a newspaper prints an apology.


5. Have you ever written a letter of protest to any newspaper? What was the fate of this letter? 

Ans. Yes, once I have written a letter of protest to a newspaper. But I never got a response from the newspaper.


6. ‘He that is unfaithful in little is unfaithful also in much.’ How does Dorothy L. Sayers cite trivial personal examples to prove that the newspapers misrepresent in various ways? Do you agree with her? 

Ans. Miss Sayers thinks that the newspaper misrepresent even trivial incidents. She gives a few instances to prove that. I don’t say that Miss Sayers is totally wrong in her judgement. But I think that she represents only one side of the coin. Undoubtfully Press is a powerful organ. In our young democracy we have begun to feel the power of the Press. The Press brings to light many ills and cases of misuse of power, mistakes, corruption etc. People would never learn about them if there was no press. Press is the watchdog of democracy. It is true that the Press needs to develop a code of high conduct for itself. As it claims to be the servant of the people, it ought to be a good servant.


7. What is the author’s attitude to the freedom of Press? Do you agree with her? 

Ans. The author agrees that the Press should be free. She says that the Press is very powerful and uses its freedom with impurity. The freedom of press is important for the cver all development of the country. But sometimes it is misused which causes disasters. There is no way to control the irresponsible behaviour of the Press. So it should be taken care by the concerned authorities. Yes, I agree with her view. In fact, press is the only source of information. If the Press is inaccurate or misrepresented. There is no way to have them corrected. So it is necessary that Press should mould and manufacture the public opinion is proper way and truthfully.


8. Indeed, we may say that the heaviest restriction upon the freedom of public opinion is not the official censorship of the Press, but the unofficial censorship by a Press which exists not so much to express opinion as the marufacture it.’ How does the writer view the relationship between the press and the public opinion? Explain. 

Ans. According to the writer, in a free country, Press is free and most powerful organ to influence public opinion. The Press can reflect public opinion, and force the governments to make or change their policies. But the author thinks that the Press does reflect public opinion so much as it manufactures it. 

She tells about some incidents to emphasise her point that if the Press can misrepresent the incidents it cannot be expected to report important matters faithfully. 

The Press lets people know only what it wants them to know. It is assumed that people can be made to belive anything. Press has several ways in which it can distort and suppress facts. People have no way to get at the truth. Their only source of information is the Press. Thus we may say that the heaviest restriction upon the freedom of public opinion is not the official cencorship of the press, but the unofficial cencorship by a press which exists not so much to express opinion as to manufacture it.
