1. What is the role of rituals in managing childbirth in traditional societies?
Ans. The birth of a child in traditional societies is a special occasion. A pregnant woman, her family and the community participate in a number of rituals. These rituals keep the pregnant woman active. She also gets a central place and feels herself strong. She gets the support of her husband and the family. In these rituals some are sensible, while others have magical effect. The pregnant woman did not feel her pregnancy a burden on her and enjoys it happily.
These rituals are culturally accepted. A pregnant woman is not under any anxiety to reinvent them.
2. Experience of childbirth is very significant. But modern technology has deprived the potential mother of this significant experience. How?
Ans. Childbirth is unique experience in the life of a potential mother. The whole period of pregnancy is a celebration period. Woman gets the support of her husband and her family. After the birth of child there is singing and dancing in the family. Thus experience of childbirth is very significant for women.
But modern obstetric care, which has developed in hospital scatting, has deprived the potential mother of this significant experience. In hospitals there are expensive drugs, unconcerned doctors and impersonal equipments. Childbirth turns from a climatic personal experience into a personal disaster.
3. Describe the western interpretation of a bride’s longing for a child in a traditional society.
Ans. The western culture is quite different from ours. In some western societies it believe that a woman is not accepted as a member in new family so long as she does not birth a child. So, she longs for a child. In these societies there is not a strong bond between husband and wife. They have to take care of everything themselves. The western interpretation is that the family of her husband is cruel, backward and wrong.
4. How do languages come in the way of a better understanding of the women’s problems?
Ans. At international fora, the debates are conducted in different languages. The women, who live in traditional societies, cannot speak these languages fluently. So they simply withdraw and keep silent in opposition. This incident shows the difficulties to understand their problems. At sophisticated hospitals same difficulty is experienced by women where the patients and doctors and nurses speak different languages. They can’t understand the feelings and problems of wonen in a better way.
5. Describe the rewards of pregnancy as experienced by Sylheti women.
Ans. The reward of pregnancy in Sylheti women is that the pregnant woman gets to go home to visit her mother and sisters for last few months of baby’s birth. There she gets all attention and care. She is given to eat what she like to eat. Mother’s achievement is celebrated as festival which is a reward of pregnancy.
6. Does the writer want to say that the use of western medicine in childbirth is producing horrible results? Do you agree with her views?
Ans. The impact of western medicine in traditional societies is one of the most problematic area of modernization. All technological change causes social problems. The prestige of the white coats is enormous. The western medicines depriving a woman from the joys of pregnancy. The anxiety of bearing a child is absent. Doctors are dependent upon expensive drugs, sparkling equipment and lots of electricity most of which they have not got in sufficient quantity. No, I don’t agreed with her views. Western medicines have reduced the number of prenatal and perinatal mortality. The mother and her baby enjoys better health. It is a marvellous achievement.
7. What could be the worse fates than death for a pregnant woman?
Ans. For a pregnant woman it is worse that the child not born well or he/she is not alive. God does not like a pregnant woman to die. Our carelessness and negligence is responsible for this. People should be educated, so that no pregnant woman or her baby ever dies.
8. What are the problems of a modern woman in matters of pregnancy and childbirth?
Ans. In present time, joint families have disintegrated and nuclear families are coming up at their place. In some circumstances the pregnant woman has to live away from family which causes many problems to face for a modern woman. She needs support and help to bring up her baby. But that is not done. She can visit a hospital to monitor every development of her baby.
